BN+AlN Composite Ceramic: Thermal vs. Non-Wetting Performance

In high-temperature metallurgy, semiconductor heat treatment, and reactive molten metal contact, BN+AlN composite ceramic is frequently considered an “upgrade material”. But what does it actually solve: thermal conductivity, or wetting/adhesion?
The core value of a BN+AlN composite ceramic is its ability to combine BN’s low-wetting / easy-release properties with AlN’s high thermal conductivity for a more uniform temperature field.
1) BN+AlN Composite Ceramic: The Engineering Logic
- Thermal Management: AlN is introduced to raise overall thermal conductivity, allowing heat to transfer faster and more evenly to reduce hot spots.
- Surface Control: BN provides the non-stick behavior. Even with AlN added, formulations are engineered to remain non-wetting for easier release.
2) When to Prioritize Thermal Conductivity?
If your process suffers from hot spots or large temperature gradients that cause cracking, BN+AlN composite ceramic is primarily a heat-transfer solution.
- Ideal for crucibles or liners that consistently crack in the same location.
- Critical for processes requiring faster thermal response or tighter temperature control.
3) When to Prioritize Non-Wetting and Easy Release?
When dealing with molten aluminum or magnesium, the focus shifts to preventing melt creeping and wall build-up. BN-based composite systems keep the melt contained, reducing wall attack and contamination risks.
4) Selecting the Right BN+AlN Composite Ceramic
Because performance depends on AlN content, porosity, and surface finish, we recommend using “spec language” for selection:
- Thermal Focus: Define target thermal conductivity and thermal shock conditions.
- Wetting Focus: Define the contact material (metal/salt) and temperature range.
- Cleanliness Focus: Specify outgassing and particle generation limits.
